Cosmos and the Fisherman
Long ago, a star was born in the depths of a stunning nebula. This star was an icy blue, and burned hotter than the sun. One day, after many millennia, this star looked out beyond its home, and saw a blue planet far below. Against the laws of the stars, her good friends, and her better judgement, she took on human form and fell to Earth.
On an isolated island hidden over the sea, there lived a young man, a fisherman, that lived quietly all alone. He saw a blinding blue light shoot down near his usual fishing spot and hurried there as soon as possible. When he saw the fallen star, he was struck by her beauty and her blazing cerulean eyes.
She said to him, “If you can show me the flowers of this place, I will be delighted, and I shall marry you.” At this, the man immediately headed off to find flowers for the girl. However, flowers could not be easily found on his island, and he couldn't find any, not that day, nor the day after. Eventually, he gave up searching, and resigned himself to failure.
But when he returned, he saw the star abducted by a wyvern, a hideous creature like a bat with razor sharp claws. Knowing he was the only witness, he resolved to save the star and fulfil her request. He got in his little fishing boat, and sailed over the ocean to places he had never known in pursuit of the vile wyvern.
Many weeks later, he finally arrived on the shore of a faraway land, upon which stood a grand building of marble. Knights guarded the entrance, clad in steel armour. The fisherman approached one of the knights and pleaded “Sir Knight, I am in great need of your help. A fair young woman has been taken by a vicious wyvern, and I believe it is my duty to rescue her.”
“Well,” the knight answered, “I do not know of any fair maiden, but a wyvern was spotted crossing the hinterlands more than a few weeks ago. Perhaps that is the one you are looking for. Regrettably, I, nor my fellow knights, cannot assist you in your quest, as most of us have been called away to fight for our country. But we will do the best we can.”
So in the Station, as it was called, the knights gave the man a horse, the best armour they could find, and a gleaming sword named Ascalon. “You will need all of these, if you are to stand a chance against the wyvern.” The knights said. The man soon went on his way, crossing through the hinterlands, to fields of ice, and then through mountains. Finally, he found the wyvern’s den. He attacked it in its sleep and easily slew it. But the young woman, the star whom he had come to love, was nowhere to be found.
In the back of the cave, he found her body, having been starved and eventually killed by the dragon. Even in death, she was still beautiful, and the fisherman wept bitterly for days on end for her loss. Carrying her, he went on through the mountains, not caring for his own health, until he crossed them and found a beautiful meadow of flowers of every kind and colour.
He laid her to rest, surrounded by cosmos flowers, as a reminder of her past self. He mourned her for many years afterwards, for the beautiful maiden that he never really knew.
